One day at a time. You're here — that's the work.
You don't have to fight it alone. FRANK 24/7: 0300 123 6600 · Crisis: 111
Creative endless endeavours that stimulate the mind. Ideas and music created — which cultivates stronger relationships, collaborators, like-minded people.
A quick, honest read. No right answers — just noticing.
Desire, not duty. What would make today feel like a win?
Adjusted for energy. Evidence, not expectation.
What made time pass without forcing it?
What felt like obligation? Where did you check out?
The plan changed because… (narrative, not excuse)
Given today's energy — what would you look forward to?
Saves per day on this device. Export now and then — the .md drops straight into Obsidian. If you can't name something to look forward to, your shelf may be too full of obligation.
Nothing here is a should. Match the mode to your energy — both are valid.
Direction setters, not daily to-do lists. Milestones, not tasks. A project untouched for 30 days quietly pauses itself — no guilt.
Creative endless endeavours that stimulate my mind. Ideas and music created — which in turn cultivates stronger personal relationships, collaborators, and other like-minded types.
Not a deadline. A loop — the making draws the people, the people feed the making.

Audio In wants line level (-10 dBV to +4 dBu). Guitar is instrument level (~-20 dBV) — too weak alone. Boost it first:
| Option | Notes |
|---|---|
| Active DI box | Clean, transparent — best for preserving tone |
| Preamp pedal | Adds colour, easy line-level boost |
| Pedalboard (last in chain) | Pedal output is usually hot enough |
| Interface line out | Works but adds latency |
| Effect | Guitar use |
|---|---|
| Delay | Echo/slapback — sync to MIDI clock |
| Reverb | Space — short pre-delay keeps attack |
| Flanger | Slow rate + high depth = ambient sweep |
| Chorus | Thicken + delay = shoegaze wash |
| Tape Echo | Warm degraded repeats — dub/ambient |
| Grain Shifter | Granular pitch/texture — experimental |
| Bitcrusher | Lo-fi crunch on clean guitar = industrial |
| Ring Mod | Atonal metallic — use sparingly |
| Effect | Guitar use |
|---|---|
| EQ | Cut low-mids to reduce DI boxiness |
| Compressor | Sustain + even level into FX |

Record knob movements into the pattern; they replay every cycle, tempo-locked. A 4-bar filter sweep evolves with zero live performance.
| Idea | Setup |

| Bitcrush pulse | Decimator bit-depth drops on downbeats |
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Signal very quiet | Add preamp/DI — instrument level too low |
| Distorting at input | Reduce preamp output — clips easily |
| FX barely audible | Raise Master FX send + wet/dry |
| No sync to BSP | Set EMX clock source to MIDI |
| Hum / noise | Ground loop — use DI with ground lift |

A phrase that creates instability is the question (antecedent). One that resolves is the answer (consequent). You know this intuitively — a melody rising to an unresolved note makes your ear lean forward; the next phrase falling home lets you exhale.
| Ends on… | Feel |
|---|---|
| 5th (dominant) | Suspended, expectant, unfinished |
| 2nd or 7th | Particularly tense, mid-thought |
| Root (tonic) | Resolved, arrived, complete |
| 3rd | Stable but slightly open |
Reference tracks: Miles Davis 'All Blues' (wide space) · BB King slow blues (crying questions) · Bach Minuet in G (textbook) · Glasper 'Afro Blue' (extended questions).
Contour is the shape a melody traces — the first thing your ear processes, before any specific note. Recognisable even transposed or on another instrument.
| Contour | Feeling |
|---|---|
| Ascending | Energy, anticipation, brightness |
| Descending | Resolution, gravity, intimacy |
| Arch | Rises then falls — a complete breath |
| Inverted arch | Dips then lifts — yearning |
| Oscillating | Tension without direction |
| Static | Stillness, drone, mantra |
Put on a melody, pen ready. Without pausing, draw a continuous line mirroring the melodic shape — feel, not notation. Afterward, look: arch? descent? where are the peaks? Over time your drawings get accurate on their own, because your ear learns to track movement in real time.
The loop as Q&A: if bars 1–2 create tension (rising, unresolved) and 3–4 release it (falling, landed), each cycle completes a thought — satisfying to repeat.
The arrangement as an arc: intro = question · build = Q&A moving forward · drop = the strong answer · breakdown = reopens · final = decisive answer or deliberate non-resolution.
Each pad is a phrase unit. Build banks with complementary pairs — a question phrase and its answer on adjacent pads. In performance, alternate consciously; feel when tension needs release.
Wave sequencing builds the phrase into the patch — design a sequence that traces a contour (low early, peak middle, falling away). Layer a question-shape lane against an answer-shape lane.
One per session, done properly, compounds faster than six rushed.
As each phrase ends, decide instantly — comma or full stop? Say it aloud before the next begins. Trust your first instinct.
Listen to one section, map its structure with Q and A. Check — did it end on an answer? Did any answers reopen into questions?
Three contrasting tracks — soaring vocal, jazz line, abstract/minimal. Draw 16 bars of each main melody. Compare. What shapes recur?
Hear a 4–8 bar phrase. Before any notes, describe its shape in one sentence. Then check, and ask: question or answer?
Phrase 1 (4 bars): arch/ascending, end on the 5th — open. Phrase 2: mirror but fall, land on root. Play back to back, feel the difference.
Take a phrase you love. Listen 5×, answer in writing: contour? question or answer? register? landing note? Why does it affect you?
Take a loop you've made. Question, answer, or flat? If flat, transpose the last 2 bars up/down a few semitones for contour. Then find a complementary response.
| If you want… | Contour | End on… |
|---|---|---|
| Forward momentum | Ascending/oscillating | 5th or 2nd |
| Resolution | Descending/arch | Root or 3rd |
| Emotional peak | Arch — rise to high | Peak is the moment |
| Hypnotic tension | Oscillating/static | Avoid the root |
| Surprise/wit | Leap then fall | 7th or raised note |
| Intimacy | Descending into low | Low root or 5th |
Tools (instruments optional): phone recorder · Voice Memos / GarageBand · Koala Sampler · Ableton · a notebook.
Weekly reflection: What surprised me? What challenged me, and why? What did I enjoy most? How did my listening change? What sounds am I drawn to?
Slowing down. This week, listening is the thing — training the ear like a muscle.
Choose a short piece (2–4 min). Write 5 small sonic details you'd normally miss — texture, decay, space, ghost notes. Recreate one with voice/instrument/object. Reflect: how did slowing down change what you heard?
No music, eyes closed. Inhale 4, exhale 4, ×8. Tap your thigh in time, let it evolve. Hum one tone per exhale. Reflect: did syncing rhythm to breath change your sense of time?
Record 3 everyday sounds (kettle, door, rain). Layer/sequence them. Tap or hum a rhythm over the top. Reflect: when did noise start feeling like music?
One single note. Play it soft/loud/short/long/slow/fast with silence between. Vary attack, sustain, decay. Reflect: how many emotions can one note carry?
5 minutes of stillness. Note and label every sound. Improvise using those sounds as reference. Reflect: did silence feel empty or crowded?
A track tied to a strong memory. Describe the scene specifically. Create a short sound capturing that mood. Reflect: what did memory reveal about how you hear?
Outside or open window. Pick one repeating sound (bird, engine, wind). Echo it, match its rhythm, then depart. Record the exchange. Reflect: did the environment feel like a collaborator?
Loosening the inner critic. Everything is material, not output.

In minimal and live settings, music behaves like speech. Sounds are roles in a conversation — asking, answering, decorating, stabilising. The goal: sustain a conversation with the minimum number of voices over the maximum time without losing coherence. Villalobos does it for 45 minutes, Glasper in five. Length isn’t the point — the quality of the conversation is.
| Role | Phrase type | Instrument | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asking | Pickup phrase | Bass / SP-404 one-shot | Before a downbeat, to create anticipation |
| Answering | Downbeat reinforcer | Bass root / kick | On the one, after a question |
| Decorating | Offbeat ornament | SP-404 percussion | Between beats — bounce and swing |
| Replying | Two-bar response | Bass or Wavestate | Bar two answering bar one |
| Lifting | Rising tension loop | Wavestate / Hydrasynth | 2–4 bars before a section shift |
| Colouring | Harmonic flicker | Wavestate fragment | Low in the mix, harmonic mood |
| Signalling | Transitional bridge | Vermona tail / noise | Moving between sections |
| Holding space | Silence | All instruments | When nothing is needed — the most important role |
Enters just before the downbeat. Creates anticipation — the listener leans toward the beat that follows. Always incomplete on its own; it needs an answer.
Enters on beat one. Grounding, resolution, arrival. The most powerful version is a single bass note on the one — no pickup, no decoration, just the root.
Lives between beats. Adds bounce and human feel without leading the rhythm or carrying harmony. Never demands attention, but its absence is immediately felt.
Main instrument plays a phrase in bar one; you answer in bar two. The reply needn’t be harmonically related — it needs to feel like it’s speaking to what came before.
A short pattern with slow filter opening or volume rise, 2–4 bars before a change. Signals something’s coming without announcing what. Too early = abrupt; too long = it becomes the dominant voice.
A soft arpeggio or chord fragment, low in the mix. Adds emotional colour without directing the ear. The listener senses it but couldn’t identify it. When it disappears, the mix feels colder.
Noise reverse, delay tail, reverb wash, or fill. A clear signal (unlike the gradual lift) that a section is ending — gives the listener permission to expect something new.
| Question | What it reveals |
|---|---|
| What role is this playing? | Forces you to know if it’s asking, answering, decorating, or doing nothing |
| Is anything needed right now? | Often the answer is no — the most useful answer you can get |
| Is the texture too dense? | If you can’t hear every element separately, there are too many |
| Is the groove too stable? | Excessive stability becomes predictable — one removal restores tension |
| What is the conversation about? | The emotional centre. Can’t answer in one word? The jam lacks direction |
| What would Villalobos remove? | Forces you to subtract rather than add |
So when the groove needs a question, you know exactly where to reach.
| Bank | Function | What to load |
|---|---|---|
| A | Pickup / Question | Ascending fragments, pre-beat one-shots, high energy |
| B | Response / Answer | Root bass hits, downbeat reinforcers, low density |

| Villalobos | Mastery of silence as a phrase type. Study the eight-bar rule and the reverb-tail bridge in action |
| Ion Ludwig | The groove decorator at its finest — offbeat ornaments, soul details, four-element maximum as a rule |
| Robert Glasper | Q&A phrasing in its purest form. Double Booked for question-answer, Black Radio for harmonic flicker |
| To build a habit | To break one |
|---|---|
| Make it obvious | Make it invisible |
| Make it attractive | Make it unattractive |
| Make it easy | Make it difficult |
| Make it satisfying | Make it unsatisfying |
This part is built into your Daily tab — documented here for completeness. Short, dopamine-rich, clear exit.
When you want to do a focused creative rep, run this. Five moving pieces you rearrange — no rigid schedule, no guilt.
| S · Spark | 2-minute ignition ritual. The only goal is starting. |
|---|---|
| T · Time-Block | 10, 20, or 45-min micro-session. You choose. |
| A · Alternate | Switch skills every session. Novelty = focus. |
| R · Reward | Pre-planned treat for effort (see the menu below). |
| T · Track | Visual wins only. Count sessions, not perfection. |
Pick any module, any order. Each has 2-min sparks and 10-min sessions. They reinforce each other — that’s why you alternate.
Train your ear, build rhythm awareness, let music scaffold the other skills. No instrument needed.
Collect words like stamps. No drills — curiosity, context, creative usage.
Build clarity, confidence, vocal muscle. Say it clearly and you can write it clearly.
Capture the beautiful noise of scattered thoughts. Low stakes, high permission. The jangle is the draft.
When skills reinforce each other you get compound learning. The part the practice shelf can’t do.
Match your energy. Every template alternates skills to protect dopamine.
| Template | Structure |
|---|---|
| 🪫 Rescue mode (5 min) | 1 min each: music · vocab · comms · writing spark, then 1 min reward. For days when even 10 min feels impossible. |
| ⚡ The sprint (20 min) | 5 min each: music (listen) · vocab (5-word dose) · comms (shadowing) · writing (100 words) |
| 🔥 Deep block (45 min) | 10 min each module + 5 min integration (pick one thing to share) |
| 📅 Weekly scatter-gather | Mon cross-pollinate · Tue music+vocab · Wed comms+writing · Thu cross-pollinate · Fri free/review · weekend optional deep block |
Pre-decided, zero-friction rescue moves for brick-brain days.
| Move | How |
|---|---|
| 🔥 The 3-minute rule | "I’m only doing 3 minutes." Set a timer. You can stop after. (You probably won’t.) |
| 👥 Instant body double | Focusmate or a "study with me" video. Social pressure unlocks you. |
| 📍 Change locations | Different room, cafe, even the floor. Novelty resets dopamine — a fresh start. |
| 🎵 Music anchor | Play ONE specific "work signal" song every time you start. Pavlov yourself. |
| 🗣️ Talk it out | Voice memo: "Okay, I need to do [task]. First I will…" Hearing the plan reduces paralysis. |
| ✂️ Cut it in half | Half what you planned. Then half again. One sentence instead of a paragraph. |
Pre-plan rewards — when motivation crashes you can’t decide, so you just pick from the list. Reward effort, not output. Did you sit down? That’s the win.
| ☕ Small | Special drink, snack, 5-min scroll |
|---|---|
| 🎮 Medium | 20-min game, a show episode, a walk |
| 🎁 Big | New album, book, dinner out |
| 🌟 Sensory | Candle, blanket, favourite music loud |
| 📱 Social | Text a friend, share a win, voice memo |
| ✅ Symbolic | Check a box, update tracker, snap a photo |
| Prompt | Use |
|---|---|
| Flip It | What if the opposite were true? |
| Steal Like an Artist | What would [someone you admire] do? Write in their voice |
| Random Combination | Smash two unrelated notes together |
| Worst Idea First | The stupidest version, then make it slightly less stupid |
| Future Self | It’s a year on and this worked — write the story backward |
| Constraint Play | No money / no tech / 10 minutes? |
| Outside In | How would a 5-year-old explain it? A sci-fi alien? |
| Deathbed Test | Will this matter in 5 years? If yes, why? |
| Role Swap | If the problem were a film, what genre? Who’s the villain? |
| Time Travel | What would Past You (6 months ago) advise? |
Explaining forces active recall and exposes the difference between recognising something and actually knowing it. The moment you stumble is the exact spot your understanding is thin — which is information, not failure.
| Review | Roughly when | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1st review | Same day or next day | While it’s fresh |
| 2nd | 2–3 days later | Just as it starts to fade |
| 3rd | ~1 week | Stretch the interval |
| 4th | ~2–3 weeks | Longer gap each time |
| 5th+ | Monthly | It’s nearly owned |
| Tool | Note |
|---|---|
| Anki | Free, the standard. Automates the intervals for you. |
| Paper flashcards | Three-box Leitner system — move cards back boxes as you get them right. |
| Self-questioning | No tools — just ask "what did I learn yesterday?" and answer cold. |
From your reading framework — structure each page in three zones:
| Zone | What goes there | Phrase |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Your starting guess / hypothesis | "I think this will show…" |
| Middle | Keywords + your reactions | "This CHALLENGES / ADDS / CONNECTS because…" |
| Bottom | Consolidation | "So now I think…" + "My next question is…" |
Say a new word aloud five times with different emotions. Use it in a real sentence the same day. A word you’ve said is far more available than one you’ve only read.
| Activity | Mode | Truth |
|---|---|---|
| Re-reading notes | Passive | Feels like work, low retention |
| Watching a tutorial | Passive | Fine for intake — becomes active only if you do something with it |
| Explaining it aloud | Active | High retention — the Feynman dump |
| Self-testing from memory | Active | Highest retention — active recall |
| Writing it in your words | Active | Compression forces understanding |
| Making something with it | Active | The strongest — you can’t fake it |

Park something to read or watch. A "why" and "when" keep it from rotting.
